As you know Sherwood Art Week isn't all about art and artists, it gives you the opportunity to have a go at various workshops throughout the week.


This is what we have lined up for this year.


Art Marquee Saturday 16th June at Sherwood Festival, Woodthorpe Park


Come along to see demonstrations and take part in a range of drop-in workshops between 12 – 6pm at the SAW Art Marquee at Sherwood Festival.





Workshops take place at the Sherwood Workshop on Mansfield Road unless otherwise stated. Each workshop costs £3 and includes all materials.

What’s happening for Sherwood Art Week 2012?

Since the beginning of 2012, groups of volunteers have been organising this year’s Sherwood Art Week.  It was a bit of a late start but we have been busy planning a week packed with different events and activities.

Sherwood Art Week 2012 is taking place during the week 16^th to 24^th June. 

We start with the Art Marquee at Sherwood Festival on Saturday 16^th June in Woodthorpe Park.  Nearly 80 local shops, pubs and businesses will be taking part in Art in the Shops, with a wide range of different artists and makers exhibiting their work all week.  We have a programme of have a go workshops organised throughout the week.  Exhibitions of local artists work will be held at a range of community venues (St John’s, St Martin’s and Methodist Churches, The Place and Sherwood Community Centre) from Friday 22^nd until Sunday 24^th June.  The Secret Garden Craft Fair returns to the United Reformed Church, Edwards Lane on Saturday from 11am – 6pm with over 40 stalls, food, music, children’s quarter and exhibitions.  We will have an information stall in Room Full of Butterflies throughout the week for information and bookings.  In addition, a number of community projects (renewing some of the artists’ panels on the sides of the bus depot, a library mural, ATCs and schools work) have been taking place before the actual week begins.

WE NEED YOU

Sherwood Art Week is entirely run by volunteers and its success depends on a range of local people getting involved.

You’ve probably realised we’ve already got quite a few people giving up their time to make all this happen – believe it or not, we’re quite enjoying it!

We also have some volunteers who’ve helped out before and have promised to do it again but we still need more…..

We have something for everyone from the preparation and physical setting up of the exhibitions and craft fair, to distribution of publicity material, to helping out at events, to simply telling your friends and neighbours what’s happening and inviting them along.  If you are thinking of getting involved, there is a list of some of the roles in a separate email to follow.

Voluntary Artist Brief

Sherwood Art Week and Sherwood Library are looking for an Artist or group of Artists to create a design/mural for the walls of the stairway in Sherwood Library.

We would like the design to be:

·         Welcoming and unique

·         Appealing to people of all ages

·         Lead people up the stairs – possibly following a trail

·         Bright, but not overpowering; pleasing to be eye, but not bland!

It would be great if the design could be reflective of the local community and uses of the Library in some way.

Delivery

We are hoping for simple and effective 2D images on the walls above and/or below the handrail  in an appropriate, sustainable medium.  

Between 8^th May and 14^th June (a period of approx 5 weeks) we hope the selected artist will be able to meet with the Library Manager to discuss design ideas and arrange times to complete the artwork in time for the start of Sherwood Art Week on 16^th June. 

Budget 

There is a very minimal budget to cover the costs of paint of £100.  In keeping with all of Sherwood Art Week projects, Artists are giving their time and expertise on a voluntary basis.

Timescale

Application deadline: Monday 7^th May 2012    Completion deadline: Friday 15^th June 2012.

Your application will be considered by the Library Manager, Alison Walker, and representatives from some of the library users.  If you would like to see the space or have any enquiries, please visit Sherwood Library during normal opening times.    

 

Artist Trading Cards Registration Call

Sherwood Art Week annual Artist Trading Card event is coming to the Textile Workshop this summer, and we are looking for artists of all ages and disciplines to register now.

Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) are miniature works of art. They can be created with any material imaginable. Cards can be made from paper, wool, wood, clay and more. The event is for local artists to network and see the variety of work produced. The actual ‘swop’ is not open to the public, but an exhibition of all the cards will be on display after the event at Sherwood arts week.

The registration deadline is March 16^th 2012. A week after registration, participants will be contacted to confirm the number of cards they are required to create for the June trading event. If 50 people sign up for this program, participants will be requested to create 51 ATCs for trading at the June event etc.

Cards can be produced in editions (a limited number of the same card), series (set of cards with a unifying theme), or as singular originals.

The main requirement is the size: cards must be the same size as modern baseball cards <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball_cards>  or 2 ½ X 3 ½ inches (6cm x 9cm), small enough to fit inside standard card-collector pockets, sleeves or sheets. ATCs must be self-produced and signed by the artist. The artists' name and contact information as well as the card title and the edition or series number is written on the back.

That trading event will be on Saturday, June 16 at 7:30 pm at the Sherwood Workshop c/o The Textile Workshop. More details on the event program will be announced in the summer.

SHERWOOD ART WEEK 2012

What is Sherwood Art Week?

SAW is a week of art events and exhibitions located in and around the heart of Sherwood. We aim to celebrate the creativity of people in Sherwood and encourage a sense of community by providing opportunities to showcase local artists’ work and give people a chance to make their own art.

Features of the Art Week include Art in shop windows, the Open Air Craft Fair, Open Studios, Exhibitions, Workshops & Demonstrations, Talks & Film, Music and opportunities for involvement by local children.

The event is keenly supported by local businesses, residents and the Neighbourhood Management Team for Sherwood & Mapperley and is organised entirely by volunteers who are artists and local supporters. Each organisation and business involved provides space for SAW events free of charge. Contributions from local businesses, Artist fees and grants help to fund the event.

Organisation

Sherwood Art Week is entirely organised and run by volunteers.  

There is a core group which meets fortnightly and sub groups meeting on a regular basis to organise Art in the Shops, the Art Marquee, Exhibitions, the Craft Fair and Community Art.

Call for Artists

Please submit the Statement of Interest Form (download links below). Forms can be collected at the meeting on Saturday 4^th February or from The Place or send a large SAE (with correct postage) to The Place Activity Centre, 2a Melrose Street, Sherwood, Nottingham, NG5 2JP.

Please copy the form if you are planning to do more than one activity.

Applications for the Craft Fair will be a separate process, details to follow soon.

Statement of Interest

Submit the Form with images of the type of work you do that you might show at this event (by post or online) and the £15 entry fee (by post only).  Cheques payable to ‘Sherwood Art Experience’.

You can bring these with you to the Artists’ involvement meeting on Saturday 4^th February at 1pm at The Place or send in by no later than Monday 20th February 2012.

·      If you are planning to do more than one activity please make a separate application for each one.

·      You must include images of your work with your Application Form.

·      Fees are part of the revenue that pays for publicity and marketing, expenses and technical costs, and entitles the artist to sell work without paying commission.

Who can apply?

·      SAW is a community event and priority will be given to artists local to the area, but artists within the County will be considered.

·      All entrants must live, or be professionally based, in the local area (and not beyond the county boundary).

·      All entrants must be 18 years and over.

Restrictions

1.     Work must be set up by specified deadlines.

2.     All work must be original and the property of the artist entering the event.

3.     The number of pieces of work you can show will depend on your allocated space and the nature of your work. You will be notified.

4.     Work must be clearly labelled with title, medium, name, price (or NFS), contact details.

5.     Artists must be responsible for installing their own work with support from the Technical Team.

6.     Insurance for own artwork will be the responsibility of the Artist.

7.     Public Liability Insurance will be in place at each venue for the duration of the Art Week.

8.     Anything hazardous and a risk to safety will not be accepted - the organisers reserve the right to make the final decision in the event of dispute.

Art in the shops

·      PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT PROPRIETORS AT THIS TIME to avoid inundating them with enquiries - you may write the name of your preferred shop on the statement of interest form.

·      Work must be set up no later than Friday 15th June 2012

·      All work must remain in place from 9am Saturday 16th June to 6pm Sunday 24th June

Exhibitions

·      All artists showing work at one of the exhibitions will be required to invigilate for at least one 3 hour session.

·      Work must be set up no later than Thursday 21st June 2012

·      All work must remain in place from 9am Friday 22nd June to 6pm Sunday 24th June

·      The Place Activity Centre will have separate arrangements with their members who want to display their artwork or demonstrate their craft skills on their premises.  All artists who want to exhibit in other venues in Sherwood or a shop window must provide the Statement of Interest Form.

Workshops/Art Marquee

·      All workshop leaders must have their own public liability insurance. 
·      All workshop leaders must comply with the Sherwood Art Week policies and procedures.

Dates for Sherwood Art Week are now confirmed as Saturday 16^th – Sunday 24^th June 2012.

Sherwood Festival in Woodthorpe Park will take place on Saturday 16^th June where we will have a range of artist-led activities.   Art in Shops will be back and taster workshops will take place throughout the week.   Exhibitions will be open for 3 days from Friday 22^nd – Sunday 24^th June with the Craft Fair on Saturday 23^rd June.

It’s that time of year when the rather fabulous ‘Sherwood Christmas Contemporary Market’ takes place.

Organised by Rachel Ainley & Sophie Robins, the market, now in it’s 6^th year, is held at The Place, 2a Melrose Street, in Sherwood behind the old bus depot.
Many local talented makers will be selling their work including textiles, jewellery ceramics, mosaic, prints, lanterns, decoupage, photography, jams and chutney, cakes and food. Admission as always is free.
This brilliant community event is an ideal opportunity to pick up a few Christmas gifts & well worth a visit if you have never been before.

Christmas Cards & A Cook Book

Digital artist Corrina Rothwell, who designed the SAW2011 poster, has not only produced a new set of wonderfully quirky Christmas cards but has also contributed to a recently published global recipe book.

The eight cards are a funny, slightly skewed, irreverent take on the festive season, guaranteed to raise a chuckle from many a friend or relative ('drunken fairy' being a rather inspired stand-out).

Her venture into the world of cook books, "They Draw & Cook", is a collection of 107 recipes imaginatively illustrated by various artists from around the world. It is the perfect gift for a lover of the comical & gastronomical! Head over to amazon uk for more information.

Anna Collette Hunt: 'Stirring The Swarm' 08/10/11 - 29/01/2012

Anna Collette Hunt, winner of the Nottingham Castle Annual Open 'Solo Show' 2010 prize and SAW artist, presents her unique installation in Nottingham Castle.

Castle curatorial staff selected this wonderful ceramic artist for the Solo Exhibtion Prize from the 100+ works in last year’s Nottingham Annual Open. For her exhibition Anna has produced 'Stirring the Swarm', an ambitious ceramic installation of over 10,000 hand made insects which will cover the walls of the South Hall stairwell.

On their website they state that "Dry, dingy creatures cling lifelessly to the walls, frozen in the viewer's sight, alongside more dazzling 'specimens' that sparkle and shine with rich glazes and lustres."
With a touch of the Grimm's fairytale, Anna says the "narrative exhibition lures viewers into a macabre story as they are invited to follow the enchanted swarm".

Definitely not to be missed 'Stirring The Swarm' runs from October 8th 2011 until January 29th 2012. For more details check out the following links:
