Curtains Up For Local Artist

The work of one of our very own SAW artists can currently be seen at the Nottingham Playhouse. Eirian Bell's paintings were spotted by Playhouse Director, Giles Croft, who contacted her and asked if a selection of her paintings could be used as part of the set in the current production of 'Amy's View' by David Hare.
The chosen pieces are not, however, just used as set decoration but are an integral element of the plays narrative.
A member of The Nottingham Society of Artists and a contributing artist in the last two Sherwood Art Weeks, Eirian has fifteen of her paintings displayed onstage throughout each performance until November 20th.
Eirian says it has not only been an honour to be asked to participate but also "a wonderful and exciting experience".
As well as going backstage at the theatre to witness the construction of the set she has also taken part in public talks and enjoyed some first night partying!
Throughout the run visitors to the Playhouse are also able see an exhibition of her work in the theatre bar.

We'd like to congratulate Eirian on her success as she's proved art is not only for Everyone but also for Everywhere!

Click on the image to read more about Eirian and check out the following links for more information about the Playhouse production of 'Amy's View' & the Nottingham Society of Artists.

For a 4th Glorious Year - The Stuff of Life Festival

View the Flyer

SHERWOOD RISE RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION
MUM’S ARE THE STUFF OF LIFE!
The fourth annual Stuff of Life festival takes place this coming Saturday 9th October at Hedley Villas Park, Sherwood Rise and sees Mums takes centre stage. Hedley Villa’s resident Rosie (mother of Dylan, 2) will be selling old, retro and vintage clothes and costumes, whilst her mum is coming all the way from Wales and will be demonstrating her own recycled art (hand bags from plastic bags, chairs from newspapers). Event co-organiser Jack from Hedley Street also has an artistic mum who will be offering to paint people’s portraits. Mother of three, Angela (from Albany Road) will be this year’s compere and another local mother, Tracey will be doing crafts with children.

The event celebrates the diversity and history of the local area by bringing several hundred residents together in the tiny park that was renovated five years ago by the Residents’ Association. Participants can listen to live music from local bands and performers, view original artwork displayed on the railings around the park by Nottingham artists, browse a variety of individual craft stalls and sample food provided by neighbours. The former Pyclet factory will be open for apple pressing and a back yard cafĂ© will be serving freshly ground coffees and cakes (baked by more local Mums!)

Three bakeries used to operate around Hedley Park at different times and this is commemorated through a Bread Baking Competition, where anyone can enter by bringing a loaf along on the day and possibly winning a prize. It was this connection that gave the event its name – bread is part of the history of the area, but it’s also part of the present – it’s common (in many different forms) to all the many cultures and nationalities that make their home in Sherwood Rise.

The event starts off at 12pm with more performance – a cheekily named ‘Stuff the Goose’ procession around the neighbouring streets led by Chris, who describes the rhythmic accompaniment as ‘urban street beats with a Brazilian twist’. Residents’ Association chair, Mike Peverill adds that ‘the event is a bit different to Goose Fair and certainly a lot cheaper – why not come along and discover the friendliest neighbourhood in Nottingham!’
The free festival is on till 6pm and more details can be found at www.uptherise.co.uk

Bookbinding Summer School 2010

Christina Williams, one of the organisers of this years Sherwood Art Week is hosting a 'Bookbinding Summer School' coming up in the next few weeks.

It will be held at the Sherwood Workshop on Mansfield Road in Sherwood on Wednesday 21st, Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd July.
Three individual projects over three days.

Day 1. Accordion/Concertina Book.
This book is composed of a continuous folded sheet of paper (or lengths tagged together to make one) and is often enclosed between two covers. At this point there are two styles of concertina books, single sided star book or double sided fold out book. They are both good to display artwork or photographs as you can stand them up to view both sides. We will endeavour to create both.

Day 2. Flag Book and a Pocket Flag Book.
The spine of this book is an accordion fold and has two sides, each going in a different direction. The flags could have images or words or both! This basic principle can be applied to many variations on the same theme.
The pocket flag book is a flag book with pockets to hold all sorts of stuff! The beauty of a flag book is that you can create the pages before you bind them.

Day 3. A Long Stitch Book.
A long stitch book looks like a traditional book but has the advantage of versatility. Each folio is sewn in separately and can be undone and replaced if necessary. The spine and covers can be made out of a range of materials and to most sizes. An exciting project with a beautiful finished product you can use forever.

The course is from 9.30am to 4.30pm with a lunch break. Take a packed lunch or there are many shops locally.

The cost of the course is £40 for 3 days.
Book on 07809 158606 or 07803 108003 or alternatively email info@sherwoodartweek.co.uk and we will forward your messages to Christina.

SAW Focus 6 - The Secret Garden Craft Fair

Saturday 19th June 11am - 6pm
"Secret Garden Craft Fair"
The United Reformed Church
Free Entry

Sherwood Art Week begins it's week long annual celebration of creativity with the highly popular, and utterly fabulous, Craft Fair on Saturday 19th June.

This year we are lucky to be hosting the event in garden behind the United reformed Church on Edwards Lane. Not many people know where this is, hence our title "The Secret Garden Craft Fair".
However, come Saturday the whole neighbourhood will know it's location as this years gathering of local makers will be bigger and better than last years. Included in the wide range of quality wares available are mosaics, jewellery, textiles, glass, ceramics, lamps, plants & herbs, jams & chutneys and much more.

As well as the finest crafters Sherwood has on offer there will be a selection of refreshments available. The rotary club will be serving Cream Teas all afternoon, whilst the BBQ will be fired up from 11.30am, with a modest beer tent to the side providing Real Ales, Pimms' and soft drinks.
Inside the hall will be an exciting exhibition of pupils work from Carrington Primary School, so remember to pop in and experience the work of talented Sherwood artists of the future.

As if this wasn't enough to be going on with, we will be entertained by a variety of performers such as Mark Block & The Breezes, The Big I Am and Evening Chorus, courtesy of Folkwit Records, Steel Magnolias, Belly Dancing, as well as firm favourites Alamootie and Aistaguca.

The extraordinary Lady Carrington will be once again doing the honours at the official opening ceremony at noon, however you can catch her earlier as she walks up Mansfield Road admiring all the art in the shop windows.

We once again look forward to the whole community coming together to celebrate what is certain to be a day not too be missed.

The Ukrainian Cultural Centre
Fee: £1.50/£1 concessions
Booking: 07771 280671

"I am an artist. I do not have a job, I have my work .
My art is not what I "do" it is who I am.
I do what I love and I love what I do.
There are no days off from being who I am, or doing what I do.
My art is how I earn my living, pay the bills and feed my family, it is my first and last thought each day.
I am an artist and I honour and uphold that as best I can, without compromise."

Local artist Alison Knox will share her parts of personal journey both as an artist, and what art means to her. Delivered as an unscripted, engaging and very down to earth talk, Alison hopes to encourage others to follow their artistic hearts in whatever way feels good to them.
